The backstory…

I want you to know that I know what it feels like to want (and NEED) to get a team to sell on your behalf. I also know what it’s like to waste a ton of money on internet sales solutions that don’t work.

When I transitioned into my second company several years ago, I hired my first employee and had no idea what I was doing. I knew what I wanted to build – a real business that could someday start running without me – but I couldn’t find information online on how to develop my team to do that. The advice that I did eventually find was terrible – hire for ops first, then hire associate coaches, hire marketing help, etc.

The sales advice was to hire agencies, contractors and inbound closers.

Big mistake. Before I knew it, I had too much bloat in the business and all the sales were on my shoulders. I also quickly realized inbound closers know how to take orders, but they don’t actually know how to grow a business (which is not helpful at all). And agencies? Yeah, the idea sharing sales people with other companies makes no sense. 

Needless to say, as a former sales recruiter I realized it was all terrible advice so I kept doing the sales myself for a while.

Fast forward some time, we’re having our first six-figure month and my father is in and out of the hospital with major health concerns. I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders as all the sales were on ME and I felt like being there for my father would cause my company to tank (and it started to!). It was clear I couldn’t do both.

I had a breakdown as my nervous system went into shock.

It was in that moment that I realized I’d made a huge mistake.

Rather than hiring a bunch of people that didn’t actually contribute to the revenue, what I should have done was start a culture from the beginning that required everyone in the company to contribute to sales from day one.

I was overwhelmed. I was exhausted. And I wasn’t feeling like the business was giving me the payout I deserved.

Worst of all, I lived in constant fear of not being at a space in the business where I could take off if my family needed me. Because every time an emergency would come up, the sales would have to stop.

Sadly, this is how most small businesses live every day.

I almost gave up…literally. But upon doing a post mortem on my business I had some key life-changing realizations.

I had to boss up and become a leader.

I had to let my team take more responsibility for growing the business.

I had to learn how to develop people within my organization to bring in sales, just like I’d been teaching clients for years.

I needed a simple sales process.

I needed to go all-in on learning everything I could about leading and developing team.
